NYC Mover & Shaker

Commanding three-quarter-length, quarter-plate daguerreotype of a NYC mover and shaker by one of the most famous 19th century photographers:  Matthew Brady.  The photographer identification stamped on the velvet mat is for Brady’s Gallery 205 & 359 Broadway, New York.  According to Craig’s Registry Brady returned from London in 1852.  In 1853 he opened the 359 address as a second gallery.  He stayed in both locations until 1857 so we know this was done during those four years.  The sitter is obviously a man of importance and we have the feeling we have seen him before.  If anyone can share any information it would be appreciated.  Standing with his hand firmly at his waist and leaning on a book that was placed on the table beside him, this force to be reckoned with stares intently at the camera, suggesting this was not his first visit to a daguerreian studio.  The image is in excellent condition with nice tones and contrast.  There is some light perimeter tarnish and an extremely small mat mark on the top right border.  The plate has been resealed with a new glass and is housed in a full pushbutton leather case.  This is one of the finer Brady daguerreotypes we have seen on the market lately. Don’t miss out on this opportunity!
